Saturday, November 15th: "The Grassroots is Always Greener," Smart Growth Advocacy Training Program. 9:00 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.

Hot button growth-relatedissue in your locality? Not sure how to leverage your constituency power? Want to learn more about applying smart growth locally?We want to give you the tools you need to join- and help lead - the movement for smarter growth in the Richmond region.  Learn from the experts, meet other concerned and active citizens from across the region, and take what you learn directly to your community.

Now is the time - and this is the place - to deepen your commitment to shaping how and where we grow. The future of Richmond is at stake - and only through a groundswell of public participation will we see real change.

Who: Partnership for Smarter Growth, in conjunction with The Back Porch Initiatives, a Richmond-based non-profit, is proud to sponsor this region-wide Smart Growth Advocacy Training Program, featuring Glen Besa from the Sierra Club, Martha Wingfield from Coalition for Hanover's Future, Jay Ford, Community Activist, and others.

What: This crash course explores the 10 principles of smart growth and an overview of land use and transportation in the region, a local case study of community organizing and coalition building, the basics of effective lobbying, and how to shape and convey your message toyour targeted audienceand the media.  Hands-on group activities will solidify your knowledge, and take-home materials and our ongoing support will inspire the application of your new skills in your community.

When: Saturday, November 15th, 2008, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.  A light breakfast will be served.

Where: Centenary United Methodist Church, 411 East Grace Street, in Richmond.
